ZAHARA'S PALACE

Disney On The Yard Innovation Challenge

Team Project: 1st Place

DESIGN BRIEF

This design competition, created and administered by the Walt Disney Company, tasked teams with reimagining an outdoor space within their community that addressed a local need.

The Hampton University multi-disciplinary team, led by Trajan Baker, crafted a winning project proposal that used a combination of storytelling and architectural design to educate and inspire their community through physical space.

EMPHASIS

A bold, Egyptian-themed outdoor pavilion that placed an emphasis on biophilic design and stormwater management. Serving as a community epicenter, it encouraged individuals of all ages to venture ito its garden to discover the magic that lay within

AN ORIGINAL STORY

Keeping consistent with the Disney theme, the Hampton University team chose to create an original character storyline that could tie into the outdoor pavilion and the issue of flooding that sought to be addressed.

The irrigation canals utilized in the origins of the team's Ancient Egyptian Princess, Zahara, were studied for their ability to effectively control the flood waters of the Nile River. Inspired concepts were utilized in the team's project to manage encroaching flood waters from a nearby waterway.

Flood-Water Management

Norfolk, VA endures severe flooding regularly due to rising sea levels and inadequate flood mitigation strategies

Contour landscaping studies allowed the Hampton University team to increase the effectiveness of its canal system through directional control of rainwater.

TEAM CONTRIBUTIONS

The architectural design of this project was a collaborative effort between Trajan baker and Yndeiah Kilby. They were assisted with program logistics by Abdul Cokely (Marketing) and Alexis Golston (Finance)
